“A miracle of knowledge and poetry.”
César Franck Sonata for Violin and Piano – Duo Concertante
Duo Concertante perform the César Franck Sonata. Written as a wedding present for the great Belgium violinist Eugene Ysaÿe, it is a musical journey chronicling stages of an intimate, long term partnership – from the initial infatuation, through intense passion, crisis and conflict, to a final place of acceptance and deep connection.
We were honoured to be featured in the eleventh issue of smART magazine. In this interview with Arlan Vriens, we talk about our role in helping shape the future of classical music, commissioning and upcoming projects, Ecology of Being, Newfoundland, and the Tuckamore Festival.
Ecology of Being
As Canada’s preeminent chamber music duo, Nancy and Tim have received accolades across the globe through live performances and 13 acclaimed albums, commissioned over 65 new works from Canadian composers, and are founders and co-Artistic Directors of the renowned Tuckamore Festival. Their name – Duo Concertante comes from Beethoven’s inscription in the “Kreutzer” sonata, “in stilo molto concertante,” which implies the two performers are equal, dynamic voices.
“Suspended between poetry and romance, never do [they] sacrifice beauty of sound for the sake of virtuosity.”
– LA SCENA MUSICALE, MONTREAL
“There’s simply not much you can do other than sit back, listen and be carried away by the complete artistry.”
– THE WHOLENOTE (TERRY ROBBINS)
